Do you have difficulty believing in yourself? Do you struggle with self-confidence? Are you always worried about what other people are thinking of you?
If so, you’re not alone. We all deal with insecurities, and self-confidence suffers as a result.
Thankfully, we can rewrite the negative narratives we tell ourselves in order to step into our full potential.
For this 5-Minute Friday, I want to go back to my amazing conversation with Dr. Ivan Joseph. He’s a high-performance coach, a sports psychologist, and the author of You Got This: Mastering the Skill of Self Confidence. He also gave a TEDx talk on the topic that has received 19 million views and counting.
Back in July, we had a truly enlightening conversation on mental and physical routines that are essential to success. We specifically talked about using a simple exercise that can help anyone find their value and purpose. I think we could all use a refresher on this, so let’s tune back into this amazing interview.
In all his years of coaching, Dr. Ivan says that he has seen two major things derail an athlete’s performance. Number one is self-doubt. Number two is that they are distracted by the people around them and can’t stay focused on their goals. This doesn’t just happen to athletes, either. It happens to all of us. At some point in our lives, we are going to stray away from our purpose and forget our values because either we don’t believe in ourselves or we’re too concerned about what others think.
Thankfully, Dr. Ivan suggested a simple practice that we can use to recenter ourselves.
Ask yourself this: “In the last 18 months, what is the most important decision I’ve made?”
For you, that could mean entering into a relationship, starting a new business, or pivoting from your career. When you have your answer, sum up the reason why you made that decision in seven words or less.
Now for the final step, sum up that reason into just ONE word. That one word is a VALUE. Maybe for you, your word is “creativity,” “boldness,” “stability,” or “family” — there are so many options, but one a few are true to you.
Dr. Ivan uses this simple exercise to find his North star when he wanders away from his purpose, and know you can too!
