Conquering Fear and Becoming 10% Happier Everyday

Have you ever had a panic attack?

We all have moments of extreme stress in our lives, and it’s no secret that stress levels have rocketed during COVID-19. Some of us find ourselves at home with less to do and more time to worry. Others feel busier than ever as we adjust our work habits and schedule due to a global pandemic. Whatever your scenario, I’m sure that you’ve experienced stress during this time.

Stress, worry, and anxiety are all enemies that we fight throughout our lives, regardless if there’s a pandemic going around. Maybe you’re stressed about your job, your relationship status, your family, your health. Or perhaps you’re anxious about the future and don’t feel like you can move on from the past.

When these things negative emotions boil over, we panic — our bodies physically cannot deal with the amount of mental and emotional pain, and so they freak out. If you’ve experienced a panic attack, then you know how terrible it is.

We all want to be happier, but how do we get there? How do we reach that point? How do we let things like stress, anxiety, and worry not affect us so much? How do we forgive ourselves in the past and paint ourselves a better picture of the future?

My guest today is the perfect example of someone who has learned to accept himself for who he is and recenter his life in the midst of panic. I know that you’ll find this interview with Dan Harris encouraging, life-giving, and inspirational.

“Being born is a terminal condition.” @danbharris

Dan Harris is a correspondent for ABC News and the co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America. Before that, he was the anchor of the Sunday edition of World News. He regularly contributes stories for such shows as Nightline, 20/20, World News with Diane Sawyer, and GMA.

Dan overworked himself. He was in a hypercompetitive environment where the grind never stopped, and he was a skeptic of self-care and self-love. But one day, he had a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America that showed him he couldn’t continue living life the way he had. It made him start to concentrate on his mental health and learn how to be a little happier every day. Dan used to believe meditation was useless, but now he uses that tool to recenter his psyche and body into a calmer, safer place.

I’m so excited to bring you this episode because it’s focused on one of the biggest goals that all of us share: being happier. Dan studied meditation and wrote the #1 New York Times Bestseller, 10% Happier, which he also turned into a podcast and an app. Dan’s objective is to help people who are skeptical about meditation — because he once was too — while also connecting with those already on their mental and spiritual journeys.

In our last episode together, Dan shared more about his panic attack on Good Morning America and how it caused him to turn his life around. In this interview, Dan and I discuss simple ways to raise our happiness, accept ourselves, and shares about the benefits of meditation.
