I want to start today’s 5-Minute Friday with a quote by the great philosopher Plato: “The beginning is the most important part of the work.”
Here we are, right at the beginning of 2021! Now is your chance to start the year off the right way.
Today is a chance to start over, and a lot of us need the opportunity to start fresh with new goals and habits so that we can create our best year yet. It’s common that people make New Year’s resolutions during January, and the sad reality is that many of those resolutions are abandoned before February hits.
But if you listen to The School of Greatness, I know that you’re an individual who is committed to personal growth! So, if you want to make 2021 the best year of your life, you need to set yourself up for success. Today, I’d like to share with you three steps you can take to make the absolute most of this coming year.
Step #1: Prepare Yourself for High-Performance
If you want a high-performance year, you need high-performance habits like meditation, exercise, healthy eating, and self-care. These aren’t just habits you can pick and choose to add to your life — taking care of your mind and body is essential if you want to be a high-achiever in 2021.
Part of this step is also letting go of the habits that don’t work for you. When you add a new habit you also have to think about what you want to let go of. If you try to do too many things at once, you won’t end up accomplishing any of them!
So today, if you’re serious about achieving your goals in this coming year, I want you to commit to keeping your mind and body in shape. Do it in any way you choose — but make sure you DO it.
Step #2: Choose the Most Important Goals.
Coming into the New Year, some people will set a thousand different resolutions for themselves… then get discouraged when not everything goes to plan. Being ambitious is GREAT, but you can’t achieve your goals if you have too much on your plate at once.
So pick just a couple of important goals for the year so you can FOCUS and direct the right amount of energy to each one. Then, once you have long-term goals, break them up into short-term micro-goals. Long-term goals are powerful, but short-term goals will help you move forward. Also, make sure to celebrate your little wins (achieving small goals) to build momentum toward larger ones!
#3: Create Systems to Achieve Your Goals
James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, says “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
I couldn’t agree more. Your systems decide whether you’re performing at the top of your game always or only sometimes. At the start of the year, you may be full of motivation to achieve your goals. But when things get tough, that motivation may start to run out, so you must create high-performance systems in your life! This can be a coach who guides you and supports you. It can be an accountability partner who makes sure you do what you say, or it can be a community of driven people like you, where everyone lifts each other up.
I just launched my Greatness Coaching program that can be your high-performance system for 2021 and beyond. It includes coaching, accountability, community, and my new Greatness Playbook where you’ll reflect, plan, and create short-term and long-term visions for your life. But whether you join Greatness Coaching or not, creating high-performance systems will be the BIGGEST thing you do to set yourself up for success in 2021.
And there you have it! The three steps to take if you want to set 2021 up for success! If I could ONLY do three things to prepare myself for a year, it would be these three. I hope you take action on what you’ve learned today so 2021 will be the BEST, most productive, most purposeful, biggest impact year of your life.
