When I started my book tour, people were always asking me, “How are you going to stay humble?”
It’s not easy.
When you start getting recognition, it can go to your head.
But you can’t share your message if you don’t believe in yourself.
It’s a balance.
You need to be confident but also know that it’s not all about you. You are a part of the story, not the whole thing.
For this 5-Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Brad Lomenick where we explore the tension between confidence and humility.
Brad Lomenick is a renowned speaker, writer, leadership advisor, and founder of Blinc Consulting. He is the author of the groundbreaking book, The Catalyst Leader: Eight Essentials for Becoming a Change Maker, as well as his most recent leadership book, H3 Leadership: Be Humble, Stay Hungry, Always Hustle.
Brad says that the best leaders all have healthy ambition.
Learn how to dance the dance of humility and confidence in Episode 762.

Can you be confident and humble at the same time?
Brad: Yeah, I think the people who are the best leaders are both confident and humble. And you know it’s the idea of appropriate ambition, you know it’s the idea of healthy ambition and it’s that “I realized I am really good at what I do, but I also realized that there’s a bigger story going on and I’m not the center of attention, I am not the center of the point of happening.” But you never shy away from that sense you’re walking into something with complete confidence that you’re the best at what you do. It’s not easy though like we ran into leaders all the time who are incredibly humble but do nothing.
Lewis: Right.
Brad: Like you know people are like “I just want to be humble Brad.” Like well that’s great but if you’re not doing anything if you’re just setting around going it’s not about me then that’s just as bad in many ways as somebody who is the other side of that.
Lewis: Yeah, it’s interesting like a dance because you know I’m talking about this a lot lately because you know I have this book come out and people are asking about my book tour you know “How are you gonna stay humble through all the success you get and for the years coming how do you stay humble?” And I said “Listen, for me it’s a dance because I know I need to be confident because confidence is what got me here and I get to continue to become confident in my vision, dreams and pursue it with an unwavering passion, otherwise I’m not going to be able to create something powerful from an idea without any evidence of it happening.” But I was like in the results you’re creating and the journey along the way I practice a ritual of humility and gratitude every morning, every night. I am constantly asking people what are they grateful for, it’s on my voicemail you know I say “If you want to leave me a message tell me what you’re grateful for.” Because I feel like I need to be in that conversation otherwise I can easily get caught up in the success and result and people you know saying great things about me here and there and be like “My stuff doesn’t stink.” So, I think it’s important for us to have like this rituals and habits in place, wouldn’t you agree?
Brad: Yeah and you know I mean it’s really easy to be humble when you have nothing to be proud of. You know when you haven’t accomplished anything people are really humble, the hard part is when you start to stack up lots of accomplishments and accolades and that’s when it’s most important to have a system posture, accountability, self-awareness in place that says ‘You know what I realized that I’ve worked hard but still at the end of the day it’s not about me’ and there is a huge sense among people in the highest level of power and influence and authority. When you’re around them you immediately know whether they are walking confident humility or they’re walking in arrogant humility.
