I want to take a moment to get grounded in our thoughts and feelings so that we can come to a place of reflection, healing, and love. The world has been a very complicated place lately, especially right now.
The Coronavirus has been consuming our minds with fear and worry, and the news and media have run with it. We’re still figuring out how to open up America again, and 4o million people are still unemployed. And in the midst of this, protests and the fight for racial justice are surging. People everywhere are speaking up about racial injustice – we are living in historic times.
A lot is happening right now, no doubt. I want to remind you of the importance of self-care — especially at this moment. Most of you are probably not taking care of yourself enough. You’re not taking care of your mind, your heart, and your well-being.
It’s extremely important that we are actively involved in what’s going on in the world right now — fighting for equality and amplifying the voices that need to be heard. During this time, we also need to take care of our mental, physical, and emotional health.
In this 5-Minute Friday, I want to give you some self-care tips that you can start using today to change your life as you change the world.
If you want to make an impact, achieve personal goals, or achieve happiness, self-care needs to be a vital part of your day to day life. There are simple things that you can start doing to start that habit.
First of all — you need to sleep. I’ve talked to so many doctors and sleep experts about the effects of not getting sleep on your body. Lack of sleep influences your mind and your emotions. It can cause things like depression and fatigue, and over time, lack of sleep can be extremely harmful to your physical health. So first — prioritize your sleep and get those 8 hours. Your body needs it, especially when it’s going through stress.
Second — nutrition. Guys, you know I love sugar. But you gotta make sacrifices to resist certain things that might be joyful in the moment so that you can create a healthy environment for yourself long term.
Third — move and stretch your body. If you sit working all day and don’t move, it’s insane how tired you feel at the end of the day. Take breaks and walk outside when possible. Do some simple yoga stretches and get that blood flowing.
Fourth — take some quiet time. This is honestly one of my favorite self-care practices. Don’t reach for your phone or remote. Do nothing. Allow your mind to rest and breathe deep.
You may not have the power to change everything around you, but you always have the power to go back into yourself and change the way you think and feel. You gotta do the work — it doesn’t happen overnight — it’s a commitment, and we’re here to support you.
