If I said that you don’t need money to make money, would you believe it?
Many of us have different perspectives when it comes to money. These perspectives are shaped by our experiences, the people we choose to hang out with, and the people we choose as our mentors. But with a mindset shift, it’s possible to believe that one does not need money to make money.
My guest today is an expert in game-changing approaches when it comes to money matters. He’s in the show, Undercover Billionaire Season 2, where he shows us how it’s possible to blow up $100 to $1 million in just 90 days! Let’s all welcome back Grant Cardone!
Grant is here with us for the fourth time, and he never stops surprising me. He keeps getting better. For this episode, we talk about mastering the most critical skills needed to make and grow money. We also discuss how to do persuasive negotiation beneficial for sales and our business. Lastly, we’ll dive in on some tips on how to build that billionaire mindset.
If you think that it is impossible to have real growth during this pandemic, this episode will make you feel otherwise. I’m so ecstatic to have Grant Cardone back with us in the studio. This is another episode of The School of Greatness you surely wouldn’t want to miss.

I’m always so excited to have Grant on my show, and the wisdom that he shares is truly inspiring! He opened up in a big way and even shared exciting behind-the-scenes stories from his reality show. Let’s dive in!
If you’re like me, you might have grown up hearing that you need money to make money. I think that it’s deeply ingrained in us that we cannot achieve anything unless we have money as an investment. Grant, however, has a different approach to this scenario.
“When we’re given 100 bucks, what do we usually do? We go out and get a job. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but I believe that we have different strategies for earning money. In my case, I don’t go the usual path of getting a job from my $100. I’m always out there looking for one thing — opportunity.” – Grant Cardone
How many of us are guilty of having trodden this similar path? Some of us might have responsibilities and commitments that cause us to go with a decision that offers us security. That’s understandable, but while trying to take the safer path, we miss opportunities.
“You don’t need money. It would be best if you had contacts. You need people, and you need to relate to them well. You need the right people though — right people that are already in play.” – Grant Cardone
Grant believes that more than the money itself, learning how to grow it is more important. That’s why he’s a big believer in being on-guard and making opportunities with the right people. Grant illustrates how he could do this by recalling an episode in his reality show, Undercover Billionaire.
“There’s this businessman who owned a mattress store. He wants traffic in his company. I said, ‘Look, I’m going to drive traffic to your store. I’m going to make sure you have the biggest weekend that you’ve ever been here. I’m going to run a promotion for you such as banners, logos, stand out in the street, you name it.’ He asked me what I wanted, and I said, ‘I don’t want your money. I want the opportunity.’” – Grant Cardone
To make the story short, Grant made it one of the highest-earning weekends they’ve ever had, which leads us to another essential point — equity.
” When he asked me what I wanted, I told him, ‘I don’t want anything except to be your partner. I want equity.’ He offered me 15% of everything above what he’s doing now. I gladly accepted the offer and asked for a ten grand advance for the 15% he just offered. I got 10,000 and a partnership, which is even better.” – Grant Cardone
Grant is a huge person in the business world, and what he’s teaching is the most significant lesson he’s learned over the years. I 100% agree that it’s high time to break the “It Takes Money to Grow Money” belief and focus on finding opportunities where you can add value. Not only is it the smarter move to make, but it is also a surefire way to help you achieve that mindset of wealth and abundance.
By getting rid of our limiting beliefs about making money, we open ourselves to more opportunities. The question remains, though, what exactly do we need to maximize these opportunities? Grant believes that the answer lies in learning how to negotiate. He looks at his personal experience as a salesman to give us this simple but powerful lesson to succeed.
“I’ve been a sales guy for a long time. When I finally realized that sales were the only thing I could get at 25 years old, I felt like I got to tell people the truth. I can’t do all these tricks — [Neuro-Linguistic Programming], the look, the mirroring, the matching, the hot potato — I’ve heard all these strategies. I can’t do it. I’m just going to be me.” – Grant Cardone
And that’s true. How many times have we heard how “being real” can lead us to success? By being real, we learn to be completely honest with ourselves, our values, and our desires. There is absolutely no way to feel proud of what we achieved if we know that we aren’t being true to ourselves.
“So, how you enroll people to your vision is like, you got to get enrolled. … I believe in my product, I believe in my investment vehicle, I believe in my company, I don’t trick people.” – Grant Cardone
I agree on the importance of having integrity when working with other people. It could be challenging to sell your ideas to someone if you cannot stand by what you’re saying. By delivering on your promises, you will surely win people’s trust, build relationships, and from there, imagine the opportunities that will be coming.
And don’t forget to combine this with excellent communication and your selling style. Grant says that soon, you’ll be unstoppable!
“… I started learning from the experts. It was only about duplicating and emulating. Then at some point, you cross over, and you become the master. You think, “I’m going to make that work. That’s going to be my stable datum.” Once I could trust that, then I could build on top of it. If I got consistent results, then I started. Then I started teaching it to other people and learning angles until I created my style and my own.” Grant Cardone
Grant’s effort enabled him to build the concept of information-assisted selling. For simplicity, the approach gives people the information upfront, allowing them to understand how much something costs before they even ask about it. Grant believes in this technique because it focuses on a fundamental concept — building value.
By building value, Grant emphasizes one thing:
“Everybody needs to win. Everybody needs to feel good about the transaction. I’d rather pay a little more and make sure you feel good than paying a little less where you’ll feel bad. As I try to do more deals, everybody seems to get motivated, whether it’s a buyer or a seller. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with the money. You have to find the motivation.” – Grant Cardone
I want you to stop and think hard. What makes you tick? What keeps you going on when things are getting tough? Is it the money, your kids, your partner, or your family? Is it the feeling of accomplishing hard things?
Whatever it is, knowing what motivates you will help you lead a fulfilling life. A robust personal motivation is something that cannot be taken away from you. It will allow you to step outside your place of comfort and be brave to take steps toward being anything you want in life. If you’re creative, it will help you unleash your talents and potential. If you’re a salesman, it could turn you into the best negotiator who has walked the face of the earth.
Through your motivation, you can build your brand and gain followers. You might be small today, but remember that every whale was once a minnow.
2008 was Grant’s most important wake-up call. That was the time of the great recession. Grant was so disappointed in himself for not putting his family in a position to flourish and prosper. He uses the analogy of being caught in the tide without a boat. Though that was a tough time, Grant learned many things that he would like to share with everyone.
“I told my wife, Elena, that we’re going to freaking rock the next time this happens. Fast forward to today, and we are in the middle of the pandemic. But here I am, shooting a TV show and my company has [had] the best year ever. We bought more assets this year than we purchased the year before. We raised more money this year than the year before it.” – Grant Cardone
Grant’s reaction to one of his life’s darkest points was genuinely inspiring. There are many moments in our lives that we encounter difficult things that made us want to stop. We blame ourselves and let the negative feelings prevent us from reaching our full potential.
But looking at what Grant did, it only shows that sometimes, it might be okay to engage in self-blame, as long as you don’t beat yourself up because of it. These moments of honest self-criticism would push you to reflect and evaluate your decisions deeply. Then you can turn them into a powerful experience that could motivate you to be a better person.
You also have to end your fear of debts. Grant believes that there should be no reason to be frightened as long as it is good debt. If it’s for a potentially more fantastic future, then go ahead and embrace obligations.
“Consumer debt is terrible. An example of this is buying Lamborghini on debt. Bad debt is anything that I have to pay the interest rate on. Good debt is: I made an investment in my consumer, or my tenant is going to pay my debt.” – Grant Cardone
If you think that with all his achievements Grant would have stopped, well, you’re wrong. He’s on his next goal of buying a business portfolio so he can continuously grow his assets as a billionaire. As you might have missed in the other episodes when he appeared as a guest here, greed is also a part of Grant’s mindset.
“You’re either a consumer or a producer or an investor. I’m all three. I consume it. I produce on it, and then I invest in it. I’m greedy about my self-improvement. I am very highly interested in my self-improvement because I know that’s where it all starts. I have to make me the most important thing in my life because other people can’t get better.” – Grant Cardone
Work on your mindset, guys. Challenge yourself to turn the negative concepts surrounding your life — self-blame, debt, and greed — into pockets of motivation to improve yourself. You have the power to change your perspective and see growth opportunities in whatever life throws at you. When you do that, no one and nothing can ever stop you.
Carlos Zafran once said, “Making money isn’t hard in itself. What’s hard is to earn it doing something worth devoting your life to.”
Whatever type of business you are in, or how much wealth you have today, I promise you that Grant’s insights can make a massive impact in your life. Again, it’s all about having a positive mindset towards money and making the most out of opportunities. It wouldn’t hurt to have a strong personal motivation too!
