I constantly think about the fact that the only definite thing in this world is what we leave behind.
Money comes and goes, belongings eventually break or get thrown out, but what people say about you will never change.
This got me thinking about an amazing episode I did with Ray Lewis.
Ray has been leaving a legacy not just in football, but to the world.
On this 5-Minute Friday, we hear some of the most inspirational words about how anyone can leave a legacy and fulfilled life behind when they go on Episode 591.
Lewis Howes: This is 5-Minute Friday!!
We have an incredible interview today, with someone who brings greatness out of everyone else. His name is Ray Lewis, and he is widely considered to be one of the most dominant defensive players in NFL history.
Ray Lewis: When that legacy is done, the shade one day will close, what will people look back one day and say, “What did you give me?” And that is, I tell my family this all the time, “I know you will, but don’t cry when I’m gone. Please, because I done it.” I ran my race, right? And now, to one day, for me personally, to hear those words, that I know I will hear, “Well done, My good and faithful servant.” Then all I can leave is everything I’ve endured, all of my pain, that I don’t remember and all of the people that come behind me, can one day look back and say, “He did, so can I.”
It’s kind of why I teach my kids that, I tell my kids all the time, when they were babies, I used to say, this is why I chase sunsets, I say, “Look at the sunset. What is that?”
“That’s the sun.”
And I say, “What is it?”
“It’s Heaven.”
“It’s Heaven. It’s just the sun that prepares for another day.”
You know, I read this book about Heaven being over 40,000+ sunsets. Streets paved in gold and you just have this place where you don’t have no memory of pain or fear, or doubt. And I said that if the last day of my life came, and people were sitting around me, I would say, “Smile! Because I made it to the other side.”
I believe all of us will be held accountable to how that we made people feel. God won’t ask one question about the Superbowl. He won’t ask how much your bank account has. He will ask a question to each and every person on that day of judgement: “Who did you send towards Me? Did you change, did you alter Heaven a little bit just by sending a person’s life to Me?”
See, because if you change a life, then you alter Heaven. And then if you altered Heaven, then you will be remembered as doing God’s will and not man’s will. And that’s what I want to be remembered as. I want to be remembered as a man that did God’s will. And when you done with that side of things, I’ll see you on the other side. Sit up under the old oak tree, glass of lemonade, with God sugar, not cane (Cain), but we have a duty, Lewis, that we’re supposed to make this world better, not make it bad, not make it worse.
And I think, me leaving here, this earth one day, there will be something said about people in general, that you will remember for a lifetime. Because it just carries over to the next life, right? The test is here. So a Bible, B.I.B.L.E. – Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Simple. But once you read it, to understand the life of Jesus and the life of all of the greats that’s spoken about in the Bible: David, Moses, Solomon, Peter, all of them. No matter what their faults were, it was what they did for people. That’s why David wrote Psalms, the book of praise, to give us just direction. Solomon, book of Proverbs, that’s why he wrote a book of pure wisdom. He says, “Read these things, because you will need these things to endure.”
And so, when you write your story, hopefully your story is remembered ages after you’re gone. And so I want to be remembered like David was remembered, a man after God’s own heart. A man that truly was okay with persecution, because I knew what the ultimate would end up.
And the ultimate, for me, is when the Lord comes back, He says, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” And I’m going to make sure I carry out my life, to make sure that I’m one of the chosen ones. And if I do that, shhhh…. that’s how you live forever. And that’s called living. That’s called life. And so, that’s why I think people like you, right, that’s why I think we can’t stop. Yeah, I think, the expansion of the mind, that’s what we all should take time to do, even when you think you’ve got your whole world figured out, you can always evolve and go different places.
