How to Add Video To Your LinkedIn Profile

Video is becoming an online content powerhouse.

And as video becomes more of the norm in terms of consuming content online, it’s important to stay up to date with using video on your blog, your social networking sites, and of course on my favorite social site for business… LinkedIn.

Why Video and LinkedIn

If you read this blog, then you know I’m a huge believer in the power of using LinkedIn to build your business or professional goals.  So what does adding video to your profile have to do with this?

Think about it for a second.  When you search on LinkedIn and browse various profiles, what do 99% of them have in common?

They all look the same!

For the most part, all of the profiles look pretty boring.  Of course people say different things, and some format their profiles better than others, but all in all, most lack character.

Stand Out From The Crowd

LinkedIn is currently one of the top 25 websites in the world according to the Alexa Top 500, and as it’s growth continues to increase, you need to do what you can to have every advantage over your competitors.  This is where adding a video to your profile helps.

Here is a step by step video explanation on how to add a video to your LinkedIn profile, what video you should add, and why it will help you improve your value on LinkedIn.

It’s fun to know you stand out from the rest of your competition, and video definitely helps you achieve this on LinkedIn.

Step 1.  Create SlideShare.net Account and add application on LinkedIn
Step 2.  Upload a video to YouTube
Step 3.  Upload a presentation to your SlideShare account
Step 4.  Insert your YouTube link in the first slide of your presentation
Step 5.  Publish the SlideShare presentation on your profile

It’s amazing the reaction I receive from people who come to my profile and are amazed that they hear a voice and see a video when it’s totally unexpected (thanks again to Jim Kukral for providing the video recommendation for me).

I’d love to see you take the “LinkedIn video challenge” by uploading a video on your profile.  Take action today and get this set up and you will be far ahead of your competition.  Once completed, enter your profile link in the comments section below so everyone can see what video you added to your profile.

Love it! Video and its usage has been front and center in my thoughts so much lately, thanks!

Great tips! Adding a video definitely makes a LinkedIn Profile stand out since it appears very few people spend the time to create a video for their profile. A company I came across the other day called Tilt Video helps make video cover letters or introductory videos more professional by automatically editing for those of us that aren't experienced in video editing. Check them out at http://tiltvideo.com!

OK, got the presentation edited, the YouTube video dropped in, and it "plays"...sort of.  For some reason, the AUDIO of the video plays but the screen remains gray.  Anyone else have this issue?  Thanks!

If you follow the steps Lewis outlined you can put the video inside of a powerpoint presentation and it doesn't cost anything.

Great video! I tried adding video with google presentation app in LinkedIn and it wasn't stable, sometimes would work and sometimes not...this is a great alternative!

Thanks Lewis!

I just did this 2 months ago and it worked just fine w/o upgrade to pro. Keep trying guys I'm sure you're just making a subtle error. I made a small mistake my first time and it didn't work...I started over and followed Lewis' instructions word for word and it worked.

I'm having the same trouble that some people had earlier in that the pres shows up but the video doesn't start. Under the Slideshare app viewer on the profile it says Go Pro to view video in LinkedIn. I guess they all caught on...

Great post - just added our About Us video to my linkedin profile and it was very easy. I'll admit, like many men I didn't follow directions all that well the first time and just started uploading my video - it worked but wouldn't auto play. I went back and listened to the video again and realized Lewis said to upload a presentation... long story short, built a quick slide, inserted youtube video prior to slide 1 and it works like a champ!

Thanks!

@lewishowes I just stumbled upon this (no pun intended) and though I'd share an alternate way to embed videos (with clickable links to your website) that I use on my LinkedIn Profile. It involves using the Google Presentation application within LinkedIn. You can check out what it looks like on my LinkedIn profile:

Hi - I have the same problem as one of the Qs below - have set up slideshare a/c, posted presentation & inserted video before page 1 as instructed.

Presentation is showing up on my profile but no video.

When I look at slideshare there are options for paid accounts that look as though they will allow video to be shown on LinkedIn - what am I missing or is this facility no longer available with the free service?

Can video (via YouTube) only be added to company product pages? I'd love to add video, either slideshare or YouTube, to the main company overview page but, if this is possible, I'm not seeing how to do it.

Did Slideshare recently change their plans ? Because I think now you have to pay for a Pro account if you want to display a video, right ?

Hey, thanks.

Actually, I work for Eurosport, Europe's largest sports multimedia platform, and we are looking to do some activity on LinkedIn around a big corporate announcement we will make in April. I thought about buying your book, but which one is the best for this type of thing? Basically, we want as many people on linkedin to be talking about this piece of news. So I want to get the lowdown. Been looking at all the vids on YouTUbe etc, but thinking your book may be the best place to start. You reckon?

Also: Putting up a video on the company page is it the same a personal one? I'm probably being stoopid, but I can't see how to do it.

Thanks Lewis, your activity is well known to us here at Eurosport, and I suppose this is a good time to big you up!!

Cheers,

Joe

As usual Lewis, great, innovative ideas and generous with your knowledge. I headed outside shot my video http://bit.ly/hC9N0C and like some of the others am struggling with the upload to slideshare bit. However, I'm sure with perseverance it'll appear on my profile in no time!

@Dallas McMillan I'm glad you said something, I couldn't get Lewis' advice to work, unfortunately, I can't get your advice to work either Dallas. A button with a plus sign on it would be very simple, but it's not there. There's the pencil symbol, but no plus button!

RossPR

@PhilipRudy It's pretty simple and straight forward.  i don't think the video goes too fast.  I would suggest that you pause after each instruction then follow that step.

@Paul_Crafer At first, I thought this pro thing was for people who wanted to directly embed video links, but then it became clear that they were rapidly moving to monetize the " video in a powerpoint" workaround.  That was a questionable business decision, because SlideShare itself has fantastic possibilities, but my first experience with it is now one of frustration.  They should have permitted it for a while, and then followed up with some other emailed ideas to use slideshare that would have made SS worth 19/mo.  If not, keep the monthly cost at around $5.  close to $20/mo is a phone bill, not a web app monthly charge.  Are they nuts?

I'm with you Paul - was working on it today and went through Lewis's instructions 5 times to make sure I didn't miss anything. Checked and rechecked the instructions yet still no go.

Believe SlideShare may have unhooked this function specifically for LinkIn and reserved it for Pro Users on SlideShare (although Lewis's still works perfectly) OR I'm still missing something.

@michaelborger choose "edit profile" and then put cursor over the slide share window - cursor will change into 4 directional arrows. Holding mouse button down, drag it to the location you want it at. Save and you are done!

@MediaGorilla yes you can add video now to your company page, only a youtube video at the moment I beleive.

@Jack Knight Have you updated your profile to the new profile? If you still have the old linkedin profile then neither method will work.

There is an alternative approach to adding video to your profile for free. Instead of using Slideshare, use the Google Docs app (with a YouTube video embedded on it).

Lewis is probably Pro, which is why his works. Gonna have to dig down and punt up 19USD/month for the privilege. Surprised there isn't a vid app for LI profiles on the scene already.
