We all want to be happy, but sometimes, it feels impossible.
Maybe you struggle with self-doubt, anxiety, or depression, and happiness just doesn’t seem like a possibility for you. Perhaps you’ve experienced a lot of struggle in your life, and the past just seems like it’s playing over and over again. It may not look like it, but even the people who “have it all together” struggle with dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
It’s a fact: Everyone struggles with feeling unhappy at some point.
Fortunately, there are daily steps and habits we can form to live happier lives. Some of these things are physical — like working out, having a healthy sleep schedule, or eating nutritious foods. Other habits are mental — when we break down the negative cycles and thought patterns, we free ourselves from patterns of disempowerment and hopelessness. And some are empathetic — when we serve others, we can better maintain our individual happiness.
Here on The School of Greatness, we’re all about making empowered decisions in our quest for happiness and growth. My guest today has created a career out of studying how to make wiser choices and live a more fulfilling, happy life.
Dr. Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology at Yale University and an expert on human cognition, decision-making, and the search for happiness. A couple of years ago, her course “Psychology and the Good Life”— which is now called “The Science of Well-Being“— became the most popular class in the 319-year history of Yale. It teaches students how the science of psychology can provide valuable hints about how to make wiser choices and live a life that’s happier and more fulfilling.
Dr. Santos has been a featured TED speaker (her talk: A Monkey Economy as Irrational as Ours) and was listed in Popular Science as one of their “Brilliant Ten” young scientists in 2007. In 2019, she launched her podcast, The Happiness Lab, which takes you through the latest scientific research and shares some surprising and inspiring stories that will forever alter the way you think about happiness.
I was so inspired by our conversation, and I’m sure you will be too! Remember: Happiness, freedom, and hope are available for you. I know this episode will bring you encouragement and practical steps to make happiness your reality.
Join me on Episode 961 to learn the 5 keys to long-term happiness and prosperity with the incredible Dr. Laurie Santos!
